Don’t have a credit card and don’t have an identity.
I am not really trying to be a smarta$$. I am a financial crimes detective for a major metropolitan city, and those are really the only ways to ensure your safety.
Obviously, the not having an identity is not possible. You can minimize your risk by not carrying any identification other than your driver’s license. DO NOT carry your social security card or that of your spouse/kids. Don’t write the numbers down and carry them. Put the cards in a safe deposit box and leave them there.
The risk to your credit cards cannot be overstated. One of the major credit card processing centers in the US was recently compromised and 110 million credit card numbers were lost to criminals. They have gone public with their loss of data, but there are at least 2 other processing centers who have also been hacked, and they have not gone public with their losses.

It is almost impossible to avoid credit card fraud and identity theft. You can reduce your chances by not giving out your personal information.
I have identity theft protection with SOLUS ID. The protection includes credit monitoring through Trans Union. If anyone ever uses my personal information I am immediately alerted. Best of all if I become a victim of credit card fraud or identity theft they do all the restoration and recovery work for me.
